Poison Parasite Running head: THE POISON PARASITE DEFENSE The Poison Parasite Defense: Instilling Persistent Resistance to Persuasion

چکیده
Relatively little work has examined procedures that produce resistance to the persuasive appeals of one’s opponents. We sought to redress this imbalance by investigating the Poison Parasite Defense (PPD)—a technique that consists of two elements, one poisonous (strong counter information) and one parasitic (associative links between one’s counter claims and the rival position). In three experiments, the combination of these two elements created enduring resistance to an opponent’s message, even when that message was viewed more frequently. In contrast, though effective immediately after their presentation, counter messages lacking one or both of these attributes were ineffective over time with subsequent presentations of the opponent’s message. Discussed are the processes underlying the PPD’s effectiveness and potential uses of the PPD.

Sex-related differences in alkaloid chemical defenses of the dendrobatid frog Oophaga pumilio from Cayo Nancy, Bocas del Toro, Panama.
Poison frogs contain an alkaloid-based chemical defense that is sequestered directly from a diet of alkaloid-containing arthropods. Geographic and temporal variation in alkaloid defense is common in poison frogs and is generally attributed to differences in the availability of alkaloid-containing arthropods. Variable chemical defense in poison frogs may have important consequences for predator-...

Complex phenotypes typically have a correspondingly multifaceted genetic component. However, the genotype-phenotype association between chemical defense and resistance is often simple: genetic changes in the binding site of a toxin alter how it affects its target. Some toxic organisms, such as poison frogs (Anura: Dendrobatidae), have defensive alkaloids that disrupt the function of ion channel...
متن کاملEvidence for strong host clone-parasite species interactions in the Daphnia microparasite system.
Organisms are often confronted with multiple enemy species. Defenses against different parasite species may be traded off against each other. However, if resistance is based on (potentially costly) general defense mechanisms, it may be positively correlated among parasites. In an experimental study, we confronted 19 clones from one Daphnia magna population with two bacterial and three microspor...

Drug and poison information centers have a critical role in fulfillment of rational drug use programs. The Loghman-Hakim Drug and Poison Information Center (LHDPIC) has been established in 2006. The main mission of this center is to provide accurate, unbiased and upto- date information on medications and poisons for the health care team and the public. This center has received more than 9000 te...
متن کاملInteracting amino acid replacements allow poison frogs to evolve epibatidine resistance.
Animals that wield toxins face self-intoxication. Poison frogs have a diverse arsenal of defensive alkaloids that target the nervous system. Among them is epibatidine, a nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR) agonist that is lethal at microgram doses. Epibatidine shares a highly conserved binding site with acetylcholine, making it difficult to evolve resistance yet maintain nAChR function. El...
